What is poetry? Poetry is a form of literature that depicts the emotions and senses of the human brain into a collaborative painting of words on paper. It is both an art form and a science, although most critics would lean towards one or the other.
I first learned about how words could affect the way people thought when I was in high school. I didn't know much about writing at all, save for a few short stories that I've written in my personal journal. My junior year changed the way I viewed writing forever. My schedule for the year had all the necessary courses you'd normally need (Calculus, Physics, History, etc.), but I needed a art class of some sort. Now normally I would have taken the generic class, but I had noticed that creative writing also filled the criteria. I wouldn't have ever guessed that writing could be an art form till then. Now, after some schooling in the art of words, I've been able to fully grasp the potential that poetry has, in many different aspects. Poetry can be used to cope with any stress a person might have. Poetry can help those with memory lose to remember. Poetry can deliver such imagery as the mind can fathom producing. Poetry... can do amazing things. Check out my poetry blog... |
What is flash fiction? Flash fiction is a complete story that is written in as little as a few hundred words and no more than one thousand words. It is a writing form that has allowed many writers to expand their repertoire, and to test ideas for future stories without giving away too much plot.
While there hasn't been a widely accepted definition of length of this category of writing, there has been a couple widely used versions from the traditional flash fiction piece (roughly 500 to 1000 words in length, and the twitter flash fiction piece (as long as a twitter post is allowed.) Although G.W. Thomas, one of the most renown flash fiction authors of the modern age, who says anything less than 300 words is considered to be micro-fiction, and not flash fiction. I personally enjoy the challenge of writing flash fiction. It also is a great medium for those writers who don't have the patience to write a complete novel, much like myself. Not to mention I enjoy the ability to deliver a good quality story that can be read in no longer then a seven minutes. It is a unique form of writing that allows readers, who don't have much time to read during the day, to read a story between taxi rides or even during a quick lunch break at work.
